About Emerson College

Emerson College is a private coeducational university, `the nation's only four-year college devoted exclusively to the study of communication and performing arts`, and it is located in Boston, which is the capital and the largest city in the US state of Massachusetts, housing more than 645 000 people, within its limits, according to the 2009 census estimate, fact which also makes it the 20th largest city in USA.

Emerson was established in 1880 and got its current name in 1939, being shortened from Emerson College of Oratory, name which was adopted in 1890. It is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc, and offers its students 27 undergraduate programs and 10 graduate degree programs, through 2 schools, School of Communications and School of the Arts, and 2 departments, Department of Professional Studies and Special Programs and Institute for Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies.

Athletics

Emerson's athletic teams are known as the Lions. The college `offers 14 NCAA Division III teams in various men's and women's sports and more than 200 student athletes represent the College in intercollegiate competition`. The distinctive colors of the Lions are gold and royal purple.
